Worship in August — Meal Church

The eyes of all wait upon you, O Lord,
and you give them their food in due season
(Psalm 145:15)

Worship on Sunday mornings in August will be Meal Church in the style of St. Lydia’s in Brooklyn. The liturgy blends ancient and modern elements and includes candle lighting, prayer, and chanted communion liturgy; as well as conversation over shared food. The music is simple repetitive, and easily learned.

You will notice that on the Worship Sign-Up spreadsheet there are lots of roles to fill! Meal Church is intentionally participatory in every aspect, from setup and cooking to liturgical leadership and clean up. Please sign up—even if you haven’t done a particular role before—and someone will follow up with you to give instructions and training as needed.

This month of Meal Church is planned by the Worship Team as an experiment. Many people in our community are familiar with this style of worship from Wednesday evenings in recent Lent and Advent seasons. Doing it on Sundays is new for us, and we are curious how we will learn and grow from this experiment. The Worship Team invites you to consider the orienting questions we posed to the congregation back in March:

  • Did I feel connected to God, myself, my community, creation?

  • Did I experience the good news of Jesus Christ?

  • Am I reoriented for a life of discipleship, serving my neighbors, working for justice and peace?

  • What detracted from the experience?
