Find Your Place — October Worship Series

Cada cual con su taburete tiene un puesto y una misión
Each person pulls up a chair. Each has a place and a mission.
—Vamos todos al banquete / Let Us Go Now to the Banquet (ELW)

Worship in the month of October focuses on belonging. What does it mean to belong? Belonging is deeper than welcome. To belong means to have a place; to have a seat with your name on it; your picture on the wall; an important role to play.

The root of all our belonging is in God’s love. Each of us is beloved, named, and called by the God to whom we belong. But how do we experience that? One way is through embodied belonging in community. Belonging is something we can intentionally cultivate.

There is cruelty and violence in our world that creates non-belonging. Borders and walls; masked agents and segregated neighborhoods; hostile glances and unkind words.

When we cultivate belonging together, even at the small local level, it is powerful. As we do, we discover belonging that ripples out in concentric circles: our belonging as individuals, in this congregation, at 3325 W Wrightwood, in our neighborhood, city, and world. To know that we belong to one another creates collective resilience and transformative power.

Join us for worship in October — along with several community activities throughout the month focused on belonging. Everyone has something important to offer and a role to play, both in this congregation and in the kingdom of God.

A note about the liturgy — Logan Square People’s Mass

During October we will be singing “Gloria” and “Alleluia” from “Logan Square People’s Mass” composed by the Rev. Aaron Musser and dedicated to St. Luke’s. Pastor Musser was a seminary student at St. Luke’s in 2021-22 and shares his thoughts about this setting here.
